List pricing as of Q1 2025 is around $2,300–$2,800 for the base unit (depending on bundle). But here's the catch: the "starting at" price you see online often doesn't include the torch, work lead, or consumables starter kit.
The vendor who quoted me $1,999 turned out to be a "machine only" price. By the time I added the hand torch (another $450) and a consumables kit ($80), I was at $2,529 — not counting shipping. That unreliable supplier made me look bad to my VP when materials arrived late and incomplete.
Bottom line: Verify current pricing at Hypertherm's official site or an authorized distributor. Ask for a full BOM quote — not just the unit price.
3. Can the Powermax 45 work alongside a CO2 laser cutter or craft laser cutter?
Yes — and this is a combo I see more shops adopt. The Powermax 45 handles thick steel, aluminum, stainless (cut capacity up to 16mm on mild steel). A CO2 laser cutter excels at thin metals, acrylic, wood, and engraving.
We run both in our shop. The laser handles signage and fine detail work; the plasma does structural stuff, brackets, and heavy plate.
One thing I didn't consider: power draw. Running both on the same circuit is a bad idea. We had a process gap there — no formal load calculation before install. Cost us when both machines tripped a breaker during a rush job. Now they're on separate 50A circuits.
If you're outfitting a new shop, plan two dedicated circuits upfront. It's cheaper than re-running conduit later.
4. How do I actually learn how to use a plasma cutter?
Honestly, I thought "it's like a hot knife through butter — just pull the trigger." Not quite.
The trigger event for me was the first major mistake: I said "just cut straight." The operator heard "drag fast." Result: a terrible kerf, lots of dross, and wasted material worth about $200. That changed how I think about training vs. "winging it."

One more thing: the vendor who said "just buy generics" cost us $550 in rejected cuts because cheap consumables don't deliver the same arc stability. Stick with genuine Hypertherm.
6. Is the Powermax 45 the right fit for a small shop — or should I go bigger?
I'd rather work with a specialist who knows their limits than a sales rep who overpromises. The Powermax 45 is a tweener: lighter than the 65 or 85, but heavier than the 30.
Here's my honest take:
- Choose the Powermax 45 if: you cut mostly 6mm–12mm steel, need portability (it's 36 lbs), and run on single-phase power
- Choose the 65 or 85 if: you routinely cut 16mm+ plate, run a CNC table with heavy duty cycles, or have three-phase power available
We went with the 45 because our shop maxes out at 12mm plate for most jobs, and we needed something we could move between workstations. For thicker stuff, we subcontract — and that's fine. A vendor who said "this isn't our strength — here's who does it better" earned my trust for everything else.
